Created in 2022, The Texas Electricity Supply Chain Map has proven a useful resource for emergency officials over the past year. The map displays facilities that are in the state’s electricity supply chain like electric generation plants and the natural gas facilities needed to supply fuel for generation plants.

New layers added display water and wastewater facilities and roads to critical infrastructure sites making the map an even more useful tool for public utilities and emergency responders helping them respond to issues in real-time.

In an interview with The Freestone County Times, Thomas Gleeson, PUCT executive director says, “The Texas Electricity Supply Chain Map is a critical tool for the PUCT and emergency responders across the state. These updates and additional map layers will further strengthen our ability to maintain the reliability of critical infrastructure, respond to incidents during emergencies, and keep Texans safe.”

Currently the map includes more than 12,746 facilities, 21,000 miles of gas transmission pipelines, approximately 60,000 miles of electric transmission lines, roughly 13,000 water and wastewater treatment plants and a basemap layer of Texas Department of Transportation roads. Users will also find features of the map that include Texas Division of Emergency Management regions, emergency contact information for facilities, and weather watches and warnings.

“The map is one of many steps we take to help ensure residents’ safety during weather emergencies,” said Wei Wang, RRC executive director in an interview with The Times. “This supply chain map is the first of its kind in the nation, and has proven to be a valuable tool for emergency management personnel to triage, respond, and collaborate real-time during emergencies.”
