When hurricanes hit Florida, the Mainstreet Daily News reported, Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) workers clock in to keep water and wastewater systems running.

Heavy rainfall can back up lines as lift stations struggle with millions of extra gallons running through the pipes. Even after a storm passes through, GRU’s employees may not return to normal operations for weeks, according to the Mainstreet Daily News.  

The major concern typically lies with the wastewater side rather than delivering water.
